Escapism On The Couch!

Version 2

I have been coming down with those Winter Blues!

With hail, wind and rain I don’t want to venture outside. The best I can do is to take a peak, and admire the contrast of warm bright deep pink flowers and cold icy white hail in the garden. A peak is all I take, because I can’t wait to get back inside.

Winter Blues! I make the most of them, curl up on my couch and read a book.

Escapism on the couch!  It was a really good book, the type of book I just couldn’t put down, I just had to keep reading it, until the very end. It was called The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins, I can only describe it as a chick lit thriller full of suspension. The perfect read for a Happy Suburban Chick suffering from Winter Blues.

How do you escape the Winter Blues?

Wishing you all a wonderful day!

Ten Blessings Of The Week!

IMG_0955

There is a cold chilly stillness outside, the clouds are still, and I can not feel a single breeze. I sense the morning is telling me to be still and write, that it is not to late to put this blog post out there. So I listen!

Life is so cold here in Melbourne, and I can not remember the last time Winter felt this cold. It is the type of Winter that requires layers of clothes, even hats, scarfs and coats. In saying that Winter is not that cold, that you can not go for a walk in nature, or get on with daily life. It just cold enough to require rugging up and putting the heating on.

The past week was a wonderful week and I felt much brighter than the past few weeks. This previous weeks Blessings Of The Week are as follows:

  1. I am so blessed for, sunshine, some fellow dog lovers to walk with and beautiful flowers of rosemary from my adventure walk this week, it was a gorgeous day for a walk and it really lifted my spirits.
  2. I am so blessed for my basket weaving with wild grasses workshop, my basket may not look that amazing but I just love it and really enjoyed the process of making it, and the company of the lovely ladies at the workshop.
  3. I am so blessed to have access to some free online learning about writing for young readers, I am learning so much, and created a second story so I feel like I am really achieving something from it.
  4. I am so blessed for Friday movie night with the boys, I just love this tradition.
  5. I am so blessed for the simple pleasure of my purple blanket to wrap around myself.
  6. I am so blessed for Hubby cooking a roast dinner on Saturday night.
  7. I am so blessed for a family day out to Cloudhill Nursery and Gardens. Beautiful magical gardens even in Winter, although I would love to go back in summer time.
  8. I am so blessed to be able to attend Yoga classes, really got to stretch my body out and relax. I always feel energised and relaxed after a Yoga class.
  9. I am so blessed that I could attend the dentist and have my broken tooth fixed, it is a costly and uncomfortable procedure, however at the end of the day I still get to keep my tooth. I am really happy about that.
  10. Finally, I am so blessed for the simple pleasure of some alone time to re-energize and relax.

Whilst this cold weather makes it easy for me to be a homebody and curl up in my chair with my blanket wrapped around me and catch up on some television series, at the moment I am watching Glitch and it is really weird. I get sucked in and just want to know what happens next.   I feel am also watching too much television.

Time to  wrap myself up in a blanket, curl up in my arm chair by the window, sip on a cup of coffee, take out my journal and write in the stillness of the morning.

Ten Blessings Of The Week!

IMG_0955

This previous week has been a true Winter’s week. It has required coats, boots and umbrella’s which I love.  However it has been so cold, especially early in the morning. I have enjoyed sleeping late, and not rushing about. Little Miss Popularity has enjoyed being indoors and sleeping on the couch.

The weeks Ten Blessings Of The Week were as follows:

  1. A brief morning of clear blue sky and sunshine to booster up my spirits.
  2. Lots of grey sky, rain, rain and more rain. Great for wearing boots, coats and even colourful scarves.
  3. Going on a wonderful excursion to Melbourne Aquarium with the boys.
  4. Having a delicious lunch of chocolate waffles and ice-cream plus hot chocolates, with the boys.
  5. Date night with Hubby, out for dinner at a lovely quiet Thai Restaurant.
  6. Red wine, it certainly the wine to drink in Winter time.
  7. Movie night with the boys, at home. This is one family tradition we enjoy every Friday night.
  8. Online writing class, finally I get to do a writing class and hopefully improve my writing and storytelling.
  9. Finally got a relaxing evening bath, so relaxing!
  10. My parents for looking after the boys for a few days, and for home made sausage rolls they made me.

Whilst the best thing has been in the garden, my Camellias are flowering, beautiful red and white flowers. They brighten up my day every time I look out the window at them.

Time to go wrap my self up in my purple blanket, curl up in the arm chair and have a nice hot cup of tea.

Today is such a cold Winter’s grey sky day. School holidays continue and the boys just don’t want to get out of their beds. I am enjoying the slow pace, and relaxing way time is spent during the holidays. It is a time of rest and rejuvenation. Certainly my teenage boys take that to mean sleeping in until lunchtime.

Once again I have my Ten Blessings of the previous week, which are as follows:

  1. I am so blessed that my dentist appointment  was moved forward a couple of weeks. I have broken part of my tooth and was relieved to get a quick dentist appointment.
  2. I am so blessed that the dentist that treated young Mighty Mouse was so kind and patient, and helped him deal with the strange sensations of the equipment in his mouth. It was also good that his teeth were clean and in a healthy condition.
  3. I am so blessed to come across a free writing course on Coursera so I can learn more writing skills and improve my writing.
  4. I am so blessed for a adventure to the movies with the boys and see Inside Out. It was a lovely uplifting positive movie.
  5. I am so blessed that I found a place to buy discounted movie tickets, which made going to the movies affordable.
  6. I am so blessed that I got to go out on a Saturday night with Hubby, and no children. It good to have some adult time.
  7. I am blessed for the relaxing Friday night, dinner, wine and a movie with the boys.
  8. I am blessed for all the wonderful music I have to listen to that makes me feel so good.
  9. I am so blessed for the time I spent with my family having lunch on Sunday afternoon.
  10. Finally I am blessed for heating and a blanket to wrap around me keeping me so I keep snug and warm, and my journal to escape in.

I am so blessed that my son  Mr. Serious now makes me cups of teas and brings them to me in the lounge, so I can sip on them as I write my blog.

Life is full of happenings and joyful adventures, with a few challenges and days of hard work. So I have taken some time to reflect on the previous week and come up with ten things I feel blessed for.

  1. A lovely adventure walk in nature surrounded by suburbia, and yet it was so beautiful for the entire time I was there it was easy to forget that I was in suburbia.
  2. I enjoy a number of soulful painting classes, where I created a terrible painting however I totally enjoyed the process.
  3. I enjoyed going to my son’s school term work expo, and it was good to see his class project and celebrate.
  4. I loved burning candles and playing relaxing music.
  5. Movie night with Mighty Mouse, I so love Alice In Wonderland.
  6. My weekly yoga class, it is so relaxing and also so energising.
  7. Completing another speech from my speech manual for Toastmasters.
  8. I was delighted that Hubby cooked my breakfast on Sunday before I went to work. It was so yummy.
  9. Fresh Sheets, I just love them, they feel so good and resulted in the best nights sleep.
  10. Finally my boys for making their beds in their sort of boy way. Good enough to make happy.

Reflecting of my blessings in the previous week always reminds how good my life really is.

Now I am looking forward to this week. It is school holidays so I am sure to get up to some fun things with the boys.

Take Time Out To Sit And Rest!

relax and rest

This week I have noticed how tired I am, so dreadfully tired. My body has been demanding that I take time out to rest. Yet I have been feeling guilty about my lack of productivity. Life so fast these days, sometimes I am scared to stop because their might be too much catching up to do. Or worse still take time out to rest; oh no that is just being super lazy. Well my body is demanding I laze about and rest.

My wake up call came yesterday! The universe showed me its wisdom. Firstly I ran into a lady who was so tired, she stated she was tired, she looked tired and I could feel her tired energy as I stood beside her. Secondly another lady was telling me how being stressed had resulted in her illness, she has been unwell for weeks now. Finally my Mum told me I sounded tired on the phone, she can always tell those sorts of things. So I listen, because pushing through the tiredness is only going to make me sick and unhappy. No I don’t want to be the Unhappy Suburban Chick, so I had better rest and relax.

I breathe in———– rest.

I breathe out———- relax.

It is sometimes a struggle for me to say no to things. A struggle to balance obligations and those things I want to do. Sometimes it a struggle to accept that I am so imperfect, that I have flaws, and that I struggle with year 8 Mathematics. Mr. Serious told me I don’t know much. These days I go about my content with my imperfections, and try to and enjoy my ordinary everyday life. These days I acknowledge the importance of taking time out to rest.

I enjoy my armchair, I enjoy my music, I enjoy reading and sipping cups of tea and I enjoy my guided meditations. Sometimes I enjoy simply sitting and gazing out the window. Sometimes it is a walk in the park. If I choose I can always find a way to stop, and find time in my day to rest and relax.

Wishing you all a wonderful day!

Finding Happiness And Relating It To My Suburban Life!

Today I ventured out in my car to go to my body balance class, only to be stopped in my tracks by roads grid locked with traffic. It all seemed too overwhelming and I sensed I was going to miss my class, so I turned the other direction and headed back home. Although disappointed, I noticed it was a bright blue sunny spring day. I opened my windows, to let the gentle breeze make its way through the house. I sat in the lounge chair all curled up with a hot cup of coffee, and watched a movie I had been hoping to see for some weeks. Finding Happiness  this is a story about a small community called Ananda that live by the philosophy that simple living and higher thinking produces the highest happiness. Ananda is a community created by Swami Kriyananda.
My big take aways were as follows:
  • Happiness comes from within.
  • Live  in a way that is focused on what can I give to the world rather than what can I get from the world.
  • People are more important than things.
  • The presence of beauty is always uplifting consciousness.
  • Happiness comes from living with kindness and love.
  • Meditation wakes up the pre frontal lobe, the positive focusing part of the brain.
  • See everything you do as an act of service from the dishes you wash at home, to the work you do for a living. Everything we do is important and requires our attention.
  • Live to be happy, then you will find things that make you happy, and be kind to people when you are kind to people you will be happy
If anything it confirmed happiness comes from within and comes from having an attitude of what can I give, not what can I take. I love the philosophy of simple living and higher thinking. This movie also re-affirmed how valuable meditation can be, and I loved the yoga. It was a story about a beautiful community that certainly knew the secret to happiness. I only wonder how best to apply the principles to my suburban life. It certainly made me think to slow down and take ten minutes to just sit in silence. The power of silence, the first thing I always notice is how fast my thoughts are racing around in my mind. It feels good to slow the mind down, and let things go. I love my yoga and could do a little more of it, and even add affirmations to my postures so as I am working with my mind as well. I can certainly work on being kind to others, and open to seeing the good in them. I can savour the beauty around me especially the  beauty of nature, and the beautiful sounds of music. I have a lovely relaxation/meditation play list that I often listen to. Mostly everyday I will start my day with an attitude of living to be happy and reframing my focus on thoughts of how can I give to this world.
Wishing you all a wonderful day!

Ten Blessings Of The Week!

Feeling grateful each day helps me make decisions from my happy place, I just know things will turn out alright, maybe not as I had anticipated but they will be alright and so will I. My Ten Blessings from the previous week are as follows:

  1. I am so blessed that I continue to smile each day.
  2. I am so blessed that I am able to have dinner each night with my family at the dinner table.
  3. I am so blessed for a comfy chair curl up in and a warm purple blanket to wrap myself in whilst I write in my journal each day.
  4. I am so blessed for a clean fluffy dog to listen to snoring in the evenings, and to accompany me on my long walks.
  5. I am so blessed for finding a great joke that I could tell and have some fun with at my Toastmasters Meeting.
  6. I am so blessed for my nice warm bed to sleep in at night, I am really enjoying it on these cold winters nights.
  7. I am so blessed to be able to have a family lunch out at the local hotel, it was a lovely Sunday lunch.
  8. I am so blessed that the boys still want to watch movies with me.
  9. I am so blessed for morning coffee that my husband brings to me in bed. I am so spoilt.
  10. I am so blessed that my son got a friendly dentist to pull out the piece of baby tooth left. No pain. Mighty Mouse was so brave and didn’t even feel it. Just soft food for a couple of days, and opportunity to have lots of soup.

It was a week that just unfolded beautifully, focused around family and the dog. Today Mighty Mouse has a day off school so we went and got a hot chocolate and caramel slice. His favourite.

Ten blessing reminds me to enjoy the simple things in life, and to notice the  little extravagances like going out for a meal or that caramel slice, so that I can enjoy them and not take them for granted.

The weather has been cold and windy. So windy that  limbs of some trees have been blown down and scattered all over the park. The puddles are so big they consume the track, and I had been required to hike around them. Yet even though I complain about the cold days, there is a part I enjoy. Like rugging up in warm blankets as I sit on the couch, the warmth of the heater, and wearing warm clothes and coats. I love my coats, they make me feel cozy and warm. The best thing about Winter is how cosy it is in my bed, how easy it is to sleep on cold Winter’s nights. There is a lot to be grateful about this time of year.

Here are my Ten Blessings of the Week:

  1. I am so blessed for my wonderful collection of warm coats, that keep me warm every morning at the bus stop, that I can rug up in and venture outside in nature during these cold Winter’s days.
  2. I am so blessed that Mighty Mouse has wonderful teachers that provide with a lovely school environment to learn and grow. He received a glowing report, and it was a delight to hear about all the wonderful activities his class was involved in, and to see how his school work had improved.
  3. I am so blessed that I could open up all my windows and let the cold breeze blow through the house, freshening the house, and blowing out all those winter germs of the previous week. I love how a fresh breeze can blow away all the stale smells and germs, and bring a clear and uplifting energy into the house.
  4. I am so blessed that I got a lovely book on whimsical writing from the library to play with. I got to spend some time just getting lost in doing some fancy writing and simple pictures.
  5. I am so blessed that I got to spend a time out at my son’s Scout group on an activity they did at the local shopping centre. It was an interesting activity and it was good to be involved.
  6. I am so blessed for Friday movie night with the boys, it is becoming a ritual that we all look forward too. This time I came home put my pyjamas on, and made myself really comfy. It is so special to have relaxing Friday evenings, after the rushing around of the week.
  7. I am so blessed for the opportunity to have a family celebration party for my Mum’s birthday. These celebrations are small, we enjoy a lovely meal together, and a yummy cake. Mighty mouse still runs around turning all the lights off before we sing a Happy Birthday song. It is so exciting.
  8. I am so blessed that Mr. Serious cooked us Sunday breakfast of bacon and egg rolls, it always taste better when somebody else cooks it. Whilst it is so good that Mr. Serious wants to learn to cook, it is a wonderful life skill to have.
  9. I am so blessed that the boys were excited about having a family day on Sunday, they still want to spend time with us, so we made the most of it and went to the Immigration Museum. Which made me think we are just so blessed to live in a country of freedom and opportunity.
  10. I am so blessed to wake up feeling joyful and having a sense of wonder. I look forward to getting stuck into my day, and expecting joyful moments, even though I know there will be some  hiccups and hardships to be faced.

Another lovely week has gone by, full of wonderful moments and a few challenging moments to remind me not to take the good times for granted.

All is well!
